Selfie, Self-Portrait, You

Introduce yourself to the class by creating three different self portraits that tell us who you are.

Selfie Format:
  • 5-inch square for each portrait
  • each portrait printed on a letter-sized sheet (in color)
  • total of three pages submitted for critique
Each student will present their three selfies and explain the concept behind each. What story do they tell about you? What values, personality traits, beliefs do they reveal—or not reveal?

Due Thurs. Aug. 24 beginning of class

Selfie Evaluation:
  • each portrait is worth 3 points (1 point each for craft, composition, concept), for the total three portraits worth 9 points
  • a follow-up writing assignment will take place during class on Thurs. Aug. 24 that is worth 6 points
Selfie Response Writing, completed during class and due Thurs. Aug. 24 at the end of class (deadline for writing moved to Tuesday August 29):
  • each student will identify a peer's selfie and write about that one selfie, critiquing it as a writing assignment
  • worth 6 points total, with 2 points each for clarity of ideas, writing composition and spelling, and overall critique
  • submitted as printed document, written in Word, TextEdit, or other word processing software
  • 300-400 words total, with paragraphs covering craft, composition, and concept
  • Times or Times New Roman font, 12 point, double-spaced
Goals:
  • to learn about image making
  • to learn about the messages and stories that images carry
  • to learn about your fellow classmates
  • to discuss yourself, and your work
  • to discuss another person, and analyze their work
